LSBU Education Forum – A Risk Shared: Developing a Regional Approach for Addressing Risks to Equality of Access to Higher Education
Thursday 4th June 3-4pm

Long‑standing inequalities in higher‑education access and outcomes persist – notably the slow progress in narrowing attainment gaps for disadvantaged and underrepresented students. Under the current regulatory framework, individual providers in England are responsible for identifying and addressing local risks through their Access and Participation Plans (APPs), yet many of the most significant barriers to opportunity in London fall beyond what autonomous institutions can meaningfully influence alone.
Join LSBU Centre for Research Informed Teaching for a 1 hour online forum to discuss how cross-provider collaboration can address misalignment between the risks experienced by London learners and the interventions being delivered across the region. The Education Forum will include:
A presentation of the London Uni Connect review of 43 London providers’ APPs which shows clear shifts in the pattern of regulated targets and recommends establishing a regional approach to understanding and mitigating equality of opportunity risks.
A discussion panel with
- Karen Roberts, Programme Manager, London Uni Connect
- Hayley Pazmino, Access and Participation Programme Manager, LSBU
- Dr Richard Boffey, Head of AccessHE
- David Gilani, Head of Access and Participation, Middlesex University
- John Blake, Director, Post-18 Project
Facilitated by: Professor Antony C. Moss, Executive Director Students and Learner and Pro Vice-Chancellor Education and Student Experience, London South Bank University; Chair, London Uni Connect
Followed by an audience Q&A.
Together we can ensure that London’s most pressing barriers to higher education access and success are addressed coherently and at scale.
Lloyd’s Foundation Bursary Programme
Lloyd’s runs a university bursary scheme to encourage students from London to apply and go to
university outside of the capital. Studying at University outside of London widens your university
choices, gives you the chance to become more independent, ambitious, experience new challenges
that push you outside of your comfort zone and helps you develop, preparing yourself for successful
future careers.
Successful students will be awarded a bursary of £6,500 per annum for three years to assist with
living expenses at university for their undergraduate degree.
